This hike is 8 miles round trip with a total elevation gain of 2,200 feet. We will wind our way through coves of old-growth forest to the park’s tallest waterfall — the spectacular 100-foot Ramsey Cascades. With all the rain we’ve had, the cascade ought to be flowing.
Each 2014 Classic Hike highlights a park program that Friends of the Smokies has supported.
In May, we’ll learn how donations made to Friends of the Smokies help protect eastern hemlock trees from destruction by invasive insects. The park’s hemlock trees are not only beautiful, but ecologically vital. We’ll discuss the varying methods of their treatment and protection.
Please come prepared for all weather, dress in layers, bring a pack lunch and plenty of water. Participants can meet in Asheville and Waynesville. Carpool details given upon registration.
